Why People Compare Unit Prices

The sticker price on two packages rarely tells the whole story, and a handful of recurring shopping situations explain why a quick per-unit calculation is worth the extra ten seconds:

  • Bulk packaging versus a smaller size. A warehouse-club tub is nearly always cheaper in total than a grocery-store jar, but whether it's actually cheaper per ounce is a separate question — sometimes a promotional smaller size undercuts the bulk option on a true per-unit basis.

In the peanut-butter example above, the larger tub wins on a per-ounce basis by about sixteen and a half percent — the kind of gap that's obvious once it's calculated but easy to miss reading two sticker prices side by side on a shelf. Common Unit-Price Mistakes

A few errors come up often enough to flag directly.
