That last rounding step matters: paint is sold by the can, not by the fraction, so a result of 1.72 gallons still means buying two full gallons — there's no such thing as buying seven-tenths of a can. The tool always rounds the final gallon figure up rather than to the nearest whole number, on the assumption that running short mid-wall is a worse outcome than having a partial can left over.
Where the Coverage Number Comes From, and When to Change It
The default coverage rate — 350 square feet per gallon — is a commonly cited label figure for a single coat of interior latex paint applied to primed drywall. It's a reasonable starting point, not a guarantee, because actual coverage swings with several factors the calculator can't see: a heavily textured or popcorn ceiling soaks up noticeably more paint per square foot than smooth drywall; unprimed drywall, raw wood, or masonry is more porous and will pull coverage well below the label number; and some paint lines — particularly deep or saturated colors that need a tinted base — simply cover less area per gallon regardless of the wall texture. If the can you're planning to buy lists its own coverage figure, typing that number into the coverage field in place of the 350 default will produce a far more accurate gallon count than leaving the assumption untouched.
The same logic applies to the door and window defaults. A standard interior door and a typical double-hung window land close to 21 and 15 square feet, but a set of French doors, an oversized picture window, or a narrow closet door will throw that off — and since those defaults get multiplied by however many openings you enter, a mismatch on a room with several windows compounds quickly. Measuring even one door and one window in the actual room and adjusting the per-opening fields takes a minute and tightens the estimate considerably.
Common Mistakes When Estimating Paint by Hand
A short list of the errors that inflate or deflate a hand-calculated paint order:
- Forgetting to subtract openings at all. Measuring wall length and height and multiplying straight through, without ever accounting for doors and windows, systematically over-orders paint on any wall with more than a small opening or two.

- Ignoring roller and cutting-in loss. A small amount of paint is lost to the roller tray, brush loading, and the unavoidable extra coat applied along trim and corners during cutting-in; a tight gallon estimate with zero buffer sometimes comes up just short.
- Reusing an old room's gallon count for a new one. Rooms with similar footprints but different ceiling heights, door counts, or window sizes don't need the same amount of paint, even if they look comparable at a glance.
Manual Math vs. Letting the Calculator Run It
There's more than one way to land on a gallon figure, and each has a different tradeoff:
- Tape measure and a calculator app. Perfectly doable for a single room, but every extra door, window, or coat is one more multiplication to track by hand, and it's easy to lose a step when a room has an odd number of openings.

Exterior paint, especially on stucco, brick, or rough siding, typically covers noticeably less area per gallon — check the coverage figure printed on your specific exterior paint can and enter it in the coverage field rather than relying on the interior-oriented default.
Should I round up separately for each coat, or just the final total?
The calculator multiplies the paintable area by the number of coats first, then divides by coverage and rounds up once at the end — that's the correct order, since rounding after every individual coat would overstate the total by rounding error stacked on rounding error.
What if I'm only painting an accent wall, not the whole room?
Set the "doors" and "windows" counts to whatever actually interrupts that one wall, and treat "length" and "width" loosely — the tool only needs a perimeter and a height to get to a wall area, so for a single wall you can approximate by entering that wall's length as both the length and width fields and then mentally halving the resulting perimeter, or simply track the one wall's square footage yourself and divide by coverage manually.
Does buying the rounded-up gallon count always leave leftover paint?
Usually a little, since the gallon count is rounded up rather than matched exactly — that's intentional. A partial leftover can is normal and useful for future touch-ups; running out before the last wall is the more disruptive outcome the rounding is designed to avoid.
